Chez Doris is the only women’s day shelter open 7 days a week in Montreal for all women in difficulty. Services include breakfast and lunch, access to showers, hygienic products and clothing, physical and mental health services, socio-recreational programs, and other support services. Their drop-in program welcomes up to 100 women per day, representing over 30,000 visits per year, and they serve 42,000 meals annually. The average age of clients is 55 years old, 85% have mental health or addiction issues, 20-30% are homeless, and all live in poverty.
During Montreal’s last homelessness count, there were 3,149 people identified as homeless. Of those, 25% (787) were women. The maximum number of beds for homeless women in Montreal is 148, a far cry from what is needed for these vulnerable women. A major donation earmarked for brick and mortar will allow Chez Doris to convert a townhouse across from their facility into an overnight emergency shelter. A portion of pre-construction costs will be paid for by the Make Sense Foundation. Occupancy is planned for December 2020.
