Cancer is diagnosis that frightens, frustrates, challenges. But the non-profit agency Pink Heart Funds in Gulfport, Mississippi encourages spirits and helps restore hope to those affected by cancer.
Pink Heart Funds is an all-volunteer charity that provides free prostheses, post-mastectomy bras, lymphedema sleeves, and wigs to women who are uninsured or underinsured. Although the charity is based in Mississippi, a grant from the Make Sense Foundation ensures that Pink Heart is able to serve women across the country referred to them from the American Cancer Society. Pink Heart volunteer Bette Johnson reported, “We are very appreciative of the grant the Make Sense Foundation have given us to help uninsured or under insured ladies all over the country. We were able to provide 132 ladies that had a single or double mastectomy with NEW prostheses and bras. We were unable to do this before. The reaction we receive is that the ladies are so grateful they sometimes cry and thank us over and over. It is a very rewarding experience to help these ladies with their needs.”
